What is changing is not a single spec-sheet number — it is the structure of the industry underneath the machines. Three forces are converging at once, and together they change how a buyer should weigh a Chinese machine against a German or Japanese one.
This is not a sales pitch. It is a buyer-grade read: what the forces are, what they genuinely improve, and — just as important — where the gap still sits so you can decide with eyes open.
In January 2026, eight Chinese ministries including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued the "AI + Manufacturing" action plan (doc. ref. 工信部联科〔2025〕279号). It is not a vague slogan; it sets hard 2027 targets:

Take harmonic reducers — the precision transmission at the heart of robots and many rotary axes. GGII (高工机器人) data shows global capacity reached about 4.9 million units in 2024 and is projected to pass 10 million units by 2030, with the bulk of new capacity built in China. Chinese makers' domestic share already exceeded 75% in 2024, up from under 49% in 2020. Similar localisation is underway for servo systems, linear motors and direct-drive tables.
The honest caveat we always state: controllers remain partner-led, not fully in-house at most Chinese makers. The "brain" is still largely sourced from domestic specialists (e.g. Huazhong / GSK) or international partners. That is a real limit, and we disclose it rather than paper over it.
The third force is the one buyers feel most directly: Chinese industry is no longer just shipping containers, it is exporting whole-factory capability and standing up local service. The trade data backs the claim.
For an overseas CNC buyer this is the practical upside: a Chinese machine-tool brand with a growing global service footprint is more likely to have spare parts, field service and local application support where you operate — the exact things that used to make buyers default to German/Japanese vendors.
The takeaway is not "buy Chinese, it's cheaper." It is: evaluate Chinese CNC on total lifecycle value, data readiness and ecosystem fit — not price alone.

Not any more, and not in the way the old stereotype implies. Chinese CNC is now backed by a multi-year state industrial policy, a fast-localising component supply chain, and full-stack "going global" capability. The honest gap remains in the deepest precision-retention and the CNC "brain" (controllers), where century-old German/Japanese houses still lead. Evaluate on total lifecycle value, not sticker price.
Partly. Motion-chain components (spindles, linear motors, direct-drive rotary tables, servo) are strongly in-house at leading makers. But the CNC controller — the "brain" — is still largely partner-led or sourced from domestic specialists such as Huazhong (华中数控) / GSK.
