What "5-axis" means — and why it matters

A 5-axis machining center (five-axis = simultaneous 5-axis machining) moves the cutting tool and/or the workpiece across five axes at once, so a complex curved surface can be finished in a single setup. In plain terms: fewer clamping operations, less fixture cost, better accuracy on 3D shapes, and much shorter total cycle time versus a 3-axis machine doing the same part in multiple setups.
