Five-axis machining centers cut complex parts in a single setup — but specs on a brochure can mislead. This guide covers the checks procurement and engineering teams should make before buying, using figures from Gree's own five-axis lineup as reference points.
The A/C rotary axes are the heart of a five-axis center. A direct-drive trunnion couples the torque motor straight to the table — no gear, no backlash, no wear. A gear-driven table is cheaper but develops backlash over time, drifting your ±5 arc-sec accuracy. For long-term stability pick direct-drive.
These are not the same. Positioning accuracy (e.g. ±5 arc-sec) is how close a commanded move lands. Repeatability (e.g. 0.006 mm) is how consistently the machine returns to the same point. Both matter; for serial production repeatability dominates. Insist on both numbers in writing.
Runout is the wobble of the tool tip as the spindle turns. ≤1 µm is the class required for mirror-finish molds and robot-grade joint links. In-house electric spindles (Gree builds its own) keep this tight and serviceable.
When the controller, servo drives, linear motors and oil chiller are all developed by the machine maker (~98% localization for Gree), you avoid import lock-in and get faster spare parts and firmware support. A machine built from third-party controls is harder to service during a breakdown.
Look past the sticker price. Compare: lead time (15–20 days standard, 25–30 days custom), warranty (12 months), training, spares availability and 24/7 support. A center at roughly one-third the price of a comparable import, with local engineering support, often wins on TCO even before volume.
