CNC Lead Time & Total Cost of Ownership
What a machining center actually costs once you count delivery, installation, tooling, downtime and spares — and how to compare two quotes fairly.
Short answer: A standard Gree CNC machining center ships in 15–20 working days; customized configurations take 25–30 days. Purchase price is typically only part of what you pay over a machine's life — installation, tooling, fixtures, power, maintenance, spare parts and above all unplanned downtime make up the rest. When comparing suppliers, evaluate delivery window, warranty (Gree: 12 months), service response time (Gree: 24-hour on-site commitment) and spare-part availability alongside the quoted price. A machine that is cheaper to buy but takes weeks to repair is rarely cheaper to own.
1. What determines lead time
"Lead time" means different things to different suppliers, which is why quotes are hard to compare. Always clarify whether the number quoted is ex-works (ready to leave the factory) or delivered and commissioned on your floor.

Why in-house manufacturing shortens the clock
Lead time collapses when a builder does not have to queue behind third-party suppliers. Gree develops roughly 98% of its core components in house — controller, servo drives, linear motors, direct-drive spindle and cooling system. When a spindle or control is a purchased import, its own supplier lead time is added to yours, and a shortage anywhere in that chain pushes your delivery date out with no recourse.
The same logic applies after installation: an in-house component can be shipped from the builder's own stock, while an imported part may take weeks through a distributor. This is the single biggest hidden variable in total cost of ownership.
2. The seven cost lines beyond purchase price
Purchase price is the number on the quote. Total cost of ownership (TCO) is what leaves your account over the machine's working life. Budget for all seven:
- Freight, duty and rigging — ocean or road freight, import duty, and moving several tonnes of machine into position. Rigging is routinely underestimated, especially where floor access is tight.
- Foundation and utilities — floor loading and levelling, three-phase power, compressed air, extraction. Heavy gantry machines may need a prepared foundation.
- Installation and commissioning — geometry alignment, laser calibration, acceptance testing against the quoted accuracy figures. Confirm whether this is included or billed.
- Tooling and workholding — holders, cutters, probes, fixtures. For a five-axis center this is a meaningful line item, since fixtures must clear the rotary axes through the full tilt range.
- Training and programming ramp-up — operator and programmer time before the machine reaches full output. Five-axis needs CAM capability and a validated post-processor.
- Consumables, maintenance and spares — coolant, filters, way lube, scheduled service, and the wear parts you should stock locally.
- Downtime — usually the largest and least budgeted cost. A machine that is down is not just repair cost; it is lost output, late deliveries and disrupted scheduling.
3. Why downtime dominates the arithmetic
Consider two machines. Machine A is cheaper to buy. Machine B costs more but is supported by a builder with 24-hour on-site response and in-house spare parts.
If Machine A suffers a control fault and the replacement board must be ordered through an overseas distributor, the machine can sit idle for weeks. Every one of those days carries the full contribution margin of the parts it should have been producing, plus expediting costs and the reputational cost of a missed delivery. A single extended stoppage can erase the entire purchase-price advantage.
Ask every supplier three questions in writing: (1) What is your guaranteed on-site response time? (2) Which spare parts do you hold in stock, and where? (3) Who repairs the control and the spindle — you, or a third party? The answers separate suppliers far more sharply than the price does.

A supplier who will not put lead time, warranty and response commitments in writing is asking you to carry that risk yourself — price it accordingly.
5. Where the money is actually saved
The largest savings usually come from process, not from negotiating the invoice:

- Confirm training scope: how many people, how many days, at whose site.
